Refrigerated vs. Non-Refrigerated Centrifuges: Which Does Your Lab Need?
The single most common question we receive from distributors and lab managers: do I really need the refrigerated version? The answer depends on your samples, your run times and your quality requirements.
What refrigeration actually does
A refrigerated centrifuge integrates a compressor and CFC-free refrigeration loop around the chamber, typically holding -20 °C to +40 °C within ±1–2 °C regardless of rotor speed. Without it, air friction and motor heat raise chamber temperature — a 30-minute high-speed run can push samples 10–15 °C above ambient.
When refrigeration is essential
- Proteins, enzymes, antibodies — activity degrades with heat; protocols often mandate 4 °C.
- Live cells and PRP — viability and platelet quality depend on stable temperature.
- Blood banking and clinical samples — standards and accreditation frequently require temperature-controlled separation.
- RNA/DNA workflows — nucleases are less active at low temperature, protecting yield.
When a non-refrigerated model is fine
- Routine serum/plasma separation with robust analytes
- Short spins (under 10 minutes) at moderate speed
- Teaching labs and QC of heat-stable materials
- Tight budgets where a cooled room already limits heat build-up
Total cost of ownership
Refrigerated models cost more up front and consume more power, but they protect sample integrity — and re-running a ruined batch costs far more than the electricity saved. For clinical, biopharma and research customers, we generally recommend refrigerated; for teaching and basic QC, a well-built ventilated model is the economical choice.
