How to Choose a Laboratory Centrifuge: A Buyer's Guide

Choosing a laboratory centrifuge comes down to five technical decisions. Get them right and the instrument will serve your lab for a decade; get them wrong and you will fight workarounds every day.

1. Define your applications first

List the tubes, volumes and protocols you run today — and the ones you expect next year. Clinical chemistry and blood banking live around 3,000–6,000 rpm with swing-bucket rotors; molecular biology pellet preps push 12,000–21,000 x g with fixed-angle rotors. The application defines everything else.

2. Speed vs. RCF — trust RCF

Revolutions per minute (rpm) is only half the story. The force that actually separates your sample is the relative centrifugal force (RCF, expressed in x g), which depends on rotor radius. Two centrifuges at the same rpm can deliver very different RCF. Always compare protocols by RCF, and choose an instrument whose maximum RCF exceeds your toughest protocol with margin to spare.

3. Capacity and rotor ecosystem

Match maximum capacity (e.g. 4 x 300 ml, 4 x 750 ml) to your batch size, then check the rotor and adapter catalog: swing-bucket rotors for tubes and plates, fixed-angle rotors for pelleting, adapters for 1.5 ml to 250 ml tubes. A centrifuge with a rich adapter ecosystem — such as the JW series — lets one base instrument cover blood bags, conical tubes and microplates.

4. Do you need refrigeration?

Temperature-sensitive samples (proteins, cells, PRP, blood components) demand a refrigerated model holding -20 °C to +40 °C. Refrigeration adds cost and footprint, but running a non-refrigerated centrifuge at high speed can warm samples well above ambient. When in doubt for clinical or biopharma work, choose refrigerated.

5. Safety, certification and support

Look for imbalance detection, lid interlock, over-speed protection and a sealed/aerosol-tight rotor option for biohazard work. Verify CE/ISO documentation, spare-parts availability and warranty terms. A responsive manufacturer with lifetime technical support is worth more than a small price difference.
